Tips on correctly cleaning your new enclosure

A shower enclosure is often the largest object in your bathroom. Figuring out how to clean it effectively and easily is an important issue to the homeowner. The problem is that some good techniques for cleaning soap scum off glass surfaces are bad techniques for cleaning the aluminum framework that holds the glass in place.

Cleaners you should NOT use include:
  • Vinegar or vinegar-based cleaners
  • Abrasive powders
  • Steel or Teflon pads
To determine what cleaners would be both effective at cleaning soap scum and gentle on the metal framework, the Bath Enclosure Manufacturers Association (BEMA) sponsored a series of tests by an independent laboratory of some of the most popular bathroom cleaners available. As a result of these tests, BEMA now recommends Comet Bathroom Cleaner in the spray bottle to clean your enclosure effectively and safely.

When cleaning your enclosure, it is important to be careful about not scratching the surface of the glass. This is tempered glass, which is a major safety feature of your enclosure. It has been treated in such a way that ensures it will break into thousands of harmless glass beads if it is ever hit hard enough to break. The tempering process puts the glass under a lot of internal pressure. A scratch on tempered glass by an abrasive cleaner, or even by a diamond ring, may compromise the integrity of the glass.
