Industry Panel: What Lies Ahead?

Top Executives from manufacturing, metal, engineering and contract glazing discuss imminent innovation and opportunities, and take your questions.

Rick Hamlin (Moderator), Cupples International

Rick Hamlin is National Pre-Construction Manager at Cupples International. Having 33 plus years in the contract glazing industry, he learned the business from the Cupples team that engineered, manufactured, and installed milestone projects such as the John Hancock Center, the Sears Tower, and the original World Trade Center Towers. His experience includes engineering and design, estimating, sales and project management.

Most his duties related to project estimating and project management on these complex projects, both in United States and internationally. Projects he has participated in include the World Financial Center A and C Buildings in New York City, Sandra Day O’Conner and Thomas F. Eagleton Federal Courthouses as well as the twin leaning Puerta De Europa Towers in Madrid, Spain.

The past four years Rick has served as moderator of the Glazing Executives Forum, and for 2 years has moderated the Glazing Industry Panel.

Mic Patterson, Enclos

Mic Patterson is a designer, researcher, educator, and entrepreneur whose work focuses on the building skin. He has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology and structural glass facades. Most recently, Patterson participated in the establishment of the Enclos Advanced Technology Studio (ATS) where he works as the Director of Strategic Development. Enclos is a leading national specialty facade contractor, and ATS is its dedicated facade think-tank with the mission of anticipating and realizing the future of the building skin. Patterson has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced façade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures.

Jay Phillips, Guardian Industries

Jay Phillips is National Architectural Sales Director for Guardian Industries Corp.

Jay oversees a 15-member team of Architectural Design Managers that support the architectural and design community in the education and specification of high performance glass.

Jay has more than 10 years of experience in the industry. Before joining Guardian, he served as Director of Business Development for Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope and held several key positions at PPG Industries. He is a past president of the Glass Association for North America and remains active in the organization.

Jay works with architects, engineers and facade consultants around the country and understands the aesthetics and performance requirements to help them build with light.. Headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, Guardian is a global manufacturer of float glass and value-added glass products for commercial, residential, interiors, energy and technical glass applications. Through its Science & Technology Center, Guardian is at the forefront of innovation including development of high performance glass coatings and advanced glass products. Guardian, its subsidiaries and affiliates employ 18,000 people and operate facilities throughout North America, Europe, South America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Oliver Stepe, YKK AP America

Oliver Stepe is Senior Vice President, YKK AP America Inc. He currently heads the company’s sales, marketing, engineering, and business unit operations and is responsible for YKK AP America’s overall strategic direction and growth strategies throughout the Unites States.

Since joining YKK AP in 1992 he has held roles of increasing responsibility including sales, regional management, and VP of branch operations.

Prior to joining YKK AP he worked as a project management executive in contract glazing in the New York City/Long Island market.

A graduate of the State University of New York, he is a current member of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and has been a member of the Construction Specifications Institute since 1993 where he holds CDT certification.

In August 2012, Oliver was named as one of the most influential people in the glass and metal industry by US Glass Magazine.

John Zahora, VP of Business Solutions for AGI the Goldratt Institute

John Zahora has over 25 years of experience in “Focused System Improvement” activities. He is a Jonah’s Jonah, TOC Project Management Technical and Design Expert, TOC Supply Chain Technical and Design Expert and has extensive experience in implementing all aspects of the TOC body of knowledge.

A qualified Lean expert and a certified Six Sigma green Belt he has a broad experience with Lean and Six Sigma and has been a driving force in developing a useable method to integrate TOC, Lean and Six Sigma. He has successfully applied TOCLSS to production, project management, supply chain, marketing, sales and strategic planning.

He also is a licensed facilitator of Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Principled Centered Leadership and First Things First.

Prior to his association with AGI, John worked in industry for more than twenty years holding both line and staff positions in production, engineering and marketing. Over this period time his responsibilities covered a wide range – from Director of Operations to Business Unit General Manager.
