WASHINGTON, DC (October 29, 2008) – The National Glass Association (NGA) announced today that it has received an Employment and Training Fund (ETF) Macro Grant contract from the state of Hawaii to provide training programs in both the auto glass and flat/architectural glass sectors. The training specified within the contract primarily includes instructor-led training in conjunction with online training to support the classroom lectures through MyGlassClass.com as well as professional online certification. Hawaii joins California and Michigan in providing grant assistance to the NGA as a training provider.
"We're extremely pleased that the ETF has agreed to support the training efforts of glass shops throughout Hawaii," said David Walker, NGA vice president for Association Services. "Our member companies in Hawaii have told us for years how difficult it is to provide training cost-effectively to their employees on the various islands. The state's willingness to include online training as a supplemental part in support of this grant was key to addressing this important practical issue."
Calvin Tamaye, vice president of Ace Auto, reinforced the urgency for online training. "Our shops are scattered throughout the islands, so it's extremely beneficial to offer online training as a component to instructor-led training to our technicians," Tamaye explained. "Online training, especially of the quality offered on MyGlassClass.com, is the perfect answer to this pressing need. We’re pleased this is a component of the instructor-led training. It will allow our technicians continuous access to training much after the initial instructor-led course.”
Doran Chavez, vice president of Reflections Glass, believes the state grant will enable the NGA to fill a serious void in instructor-led training. "We're thrilled that the NGA will now be able to bring their world-class instructors to Hawaii, so our technicians will receive one-on-one attention and be able to interact with experts in the field of flat-glass installation and design."
Each instructor-led course accommodates between 10 and 20 students.
The ETF program is performance-based, providing funds for students who successfully complete training. The program is funded by the Employment Training Tax paid by Hawaii employers.
