NGA Staff and Member Company Represent the Glazing Trade During the Event
From glaziers and electricians to high school students and their parents, all were on hand at Trades Night, held this spring, at Mead High School in Spokane, Washington, where more than 1,000 people attended the semi-annual event hosted by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Inland Pacific chapter. Trades Night is a community event, with general contractors and subcontractors from all over the region hosting hands-on activities and talking with students interested in the trades.
Trades Night includes something for everyone, with activities open to anyone wanting to try their hand at a particular skill alongside industry professionals (and under strict safety precautions, of course). Want to know how heavy a pane of glass is and what goes into installing one? Want to see what it’s like to use various power tools, lifts, and cranes? Trades Night has it covered!
At this year’s event, NGA member company All Star Glass represented the glazing trade, creating an impressively easy-to-transport-and-assemble glass installation display that allowed attendees to try different aspects of the craft, like lifting and setting a pane of glass or installing gaskets.
While companies have successfully found and hired new talent by simply participating in Trades Night, the event’s main focus is to bring the trades together to educate the public on alternative career paths outside of post-secondary institutions. Just think, if every state in the U.S. could do something of a similar magnitude in just one city, what a difference it could make in raising awareness of the trades!
