What's a Stretch Code and Why We Should be Paying Attention

Presented by Tom Culp, NGA energy code consultant and Owner, Birch Point Consulting

This session will explore some of the recent activities in Massachusetts and New York, and the potential impact across the country. While the rapid expansion of building performance standards will positively accelerate retrofits of existing buildings at the local level, there are also new “stretch” codes popping up that deviate from national model codes without the same level of technical input or rigor. If done incorrectly, some could lead down a backwards path to a new era of buildings that are actually worse for occupant health and well-being.

With two manufacturing plants in North America, located in Chester, CT, and Mississauga, Canada, Roto North America has the unique ability to build quality into the design of our hardware and bring consistent and reliable delivery service to our customers. Roto will share and discuss our vast manufacturing capabilities, consisting of zinc die-casting, customized kitting, powder-coat painting, 5-axis lasers, operator pallet lines, and injection molding.  All of these manufacturing competencies enable Roto to produce products that offer our customers high quality window and door hardware. Visit Roto North America at GlassBuild Connect.

Washington, D.C. continues to experience record levels of gridlock and the upcoming November election will further challenge the ability for meaningful action. The COVID-19 pandemic is also having a significant impact on federal and state OSHA regulations which are evolving in response. The Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) remains highly engaged in the legislative and regulatory arena on behalf of the window, door and skylight industry. In this session, WDMA’s advocacy staff will provide an in-depth look at key issues facing Washington and the industry as a whole and where they’re headed. Topics include:

  • COVID-19 relief legislation,
  • Energy tax credits,
  • Employer liability,
  • Other important legislative issues

In addition, WDMA will cover lobbying efforts at the state level, ranging from HFC regulation to state regulations on infectious disease safety compliance.

In this WDMA presentation, Rhonda Schotz, UL, will summarize the various building codes and industry standards that apply to fenestration, the required testing need to certify the product and assist manufacturers in creating test plans that maximize the ability to certify non-tested products. At the completion of this presentation, manufacturers should be able to create a fenestration product test plan for submission and approval to agency of their choice.

The Farnsworth Group and Home Improvement Research Institute partnered to provide manufacturers and retailers with consistent updates specifically on COVID-19’s impact on the home improvement industry. Grant Farnsworth presents the findings of its monthly surveys of hundreds of contractors to get a consistent pulse on project behaviors and implications caused by COVID-19. Plus, key takeaways of what this data means for manufacturers.

Join Veka for this inside look at the factory, followed by insights and discussion, including live Q&A, on the current state of industry from its executive team.

Fenestration Canada’s technical director Al Jaugelis addresses the current realities for Canadian manufacturers and suppliers.

ANSI recently approved the 2020 NGBS, the third version to date, with an expanded scope that applies to mixed-use buildings, assisted living facilities, hotels, dormitories, lodging houses, and even monasteries. The 2020 NGBS includes a certification path for the commercial space of mixed-use buildings; greater flexibility for existing buildings being renovated or converted; a new performance path for water efficiency; and new practices designed to promote resiliency, universal design, wellness.

Learn about the new and improved 2020 NGBS, how it helps architects and builders design and construct greener, more sustainable buildings, and the role windows, skylights, and doors play in helping buildings earn certification.

Trends

In the white space on the map beyond the northern border of the United States, a few hardy souls scrape out a meager existence in an unforgiving wasteland of ice and snow. Little is known about this strange land, but rumor has it that they have mastered the arcane arts of window manufacturing and commercial glazing to a degree not seen anywhere else in the world.

Join Glass Canada editor Patrick Flannery and four leaders of the Canadian glass industry for an interactive discussion of the Canadian glass and fenestration industry: what's the same, what's different, what works, what doesn't and why.

In this panel discussion presented by GPAD, join representatives from leading residential and commercial glass fabricators and suppliers as they discuss trends in the industry, top challenges, Industry 4.0 and more.

Workforce Development

What does the construction industry look like moving forward? If the industry wants to grow to meet the ever-changing infrastructure and growing population demands, we need to find ways to recruit and train new craft professionals. This presentation from the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) shows where the industry is headed and provides ideas to grow the number of craft professionals to meet the current and upcoming demands.

The skilled labor shortage continues to challenge the glass and glazing industry, with experienced workers retiring faster than we can replace them. In 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers turned 55, and by 2024, the tail end of this generation will begin retiring. According to the National Construction Center for Education and Research (NCCER), 41 percent of the current construction workforce will retire in 2031. Without a veteran glazier pool to choose from, contract glaziers need to look to the younger generation. Learn about the recruiting resources available through the NCCER Build Your Future program in this special webinar presented by the American Subcontractors Association (ASA).

In this joint session from NGA and NAWIC, hear from a panel of women executives in the construction industry, including the new president of the National Association of Women in Construction. In the midst of an ongoing labor shortage, how can companies recruit more women into the construction field? NAWIC has been in existence since 1955. How has the state of WIC changed over the decades?

Presenters:

  • Anne Pfleger, CIT, NAWIC National President, Charles Construction Services
  • Lauline Mitchell, NAWIC Vice President, BBI Construction
  • Doreen Bartoldus, NAWIC President Elect, Jacobs Engineering
  • Nataline Lomedico, CEO, Giroux Glass
  • Diana San Diego, VP of marketing, SAFTI First
