Q&A with Mike Harpell
What products and services does Salient Engineering offer?
Salient Engineering is a boutique engineering firm specializing in structural glass and façade design. We collaborate with glazing contractors, architects, and general contractors across North America to solve complex structural and building envelope challenges.
We bring clarity and confidence to every stage of a project—whether it involves a custom façade system, a structural glass feature, or a tricky interface detail. Our strength lies at the intersection of innovation and execution, ensuring that great design translates into efficient, successful construction.
What are your company's keys to success?
Salient Engineering is built on four core principles:
- Practicality – Every design we deliver is grounded in construction feasibility. If it can’t be built efficiently, it’s not a good solution.
- Creativity – We bring fresh thinking to each project, helping our clients solve problems while preserving architectural intent.
- Collaboration – Our team works closely with contractors, fabricators, and installers to stay aligned with site needs, sequencing, and performance requirements.
- Attention to Detail – From early concept to shop drawings, our rigorous approach ensures high-quality, coordinated deliverables.
What’s something your company does that sets you apart from others, or that has been helpful to the way you do business or your bottom line?
At Salient, we don’t just design—we engineer for buildability. Our deep understanding of how systems come together in the field helps reduce rework, simplify installation, and avoid costly delays. Contractors and manufacturers trust us because we know how to bridge the gap between concept and construction, supporting streamlined workflows, clearer communication, and better project outcomes.

What is a big glass project or accomplishment for your company?
University of Toronto – Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre
Salient Engineering provided full façade engineering services for this landmark academic and research facility. The project features a completely custom-designed façade system, including a long-span aluminum mullion system seamlessly integrated with bespoke skylights and punched window units. Jumbo-sized glass modules were used to accelerate installation, supported by the design of custom lifting rigs tailored for the project. The scope also included custom-engineered glass entry systems and glass railings, contributing to the building’s clean, modern aesthetic while meeting rigorous structural and performance demands.
