NGA Presents New Technical Resources on Glass Nomenclature

NGA is pleased to announce the publication of a new Glass Technical Paper (GTP), FB78-25 Glass Nomenclature - Schema 1.

Written descriptions of glass can often lead to misunderstandings due to vague or varied interpretations of the terms used. Different regions of the country and the world use different terminology, measurement systems and structure when defining a glass makeup; terms can even change over time.

This new resource aims to standardize descriptive language for glass, providing clear and concise definitions of glass compositions that can be universally understood and ensuring glass descriptions are precise and accessible to facilitate communication and improve efficiency in the industry.

Plus, the Glass Nomenclature Tool, developed by Michael Saroka of Goldray Glass and NGA task group chair, is now available. The tool provides a visual and interactive way for users to better understand and standardize glass nomenclature codes based on NGA guidelines laid out in the Glass Nomenclature Glass Technical Paper. The tool has:

  • A parser that reads the code and provides the glass description and makeup in detail
  • A visual builder for users to make a code without knowing all the rules
  • Specification formatting for glass makeups
  • A coating code list for Low-e and other coatings

NGA thanks the task group members who developed this resource for the industry.
